UV Rays & Winter Sports – Stay Safe, Play Hard!

Winter sports are an absolute blast this time of year! Think about it—snow-covered mountains, the thrill of riding up the slopes, the buzz of the ski lift lines, the cozy cafés filled with happy people, and that irresistible smell of fresh coffee.

Whether you're #skiing, #snowboarding, or #crosscountryskiing, it’s all about making the most of those short winter days. And when the sun is shining? Even better!

But wait—before you hit the slopes, let’s talk about something super important:

UV rays! We all know we need protection, but do you really know what they are?

What Are UV Rays?

The term ultraviolet (UV) literally means “beyond violet,” because violet is the highest-energy visible color. UV radiation is a powerful type of electromagnetic energy from the sun that can penetrate deep into the skin. It’s divided into three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC.

  • UVA (400–320 nm) → The most common (99% of UV rays that reach Earth). It’s the least harmful but penetrates deeply, leading to long-term skin damage.

  • UVB (320–280 nm) → Partially absorbed by the atmosphere, but what gets through causes sunburn, skin damage, and even cancer.

  • UVC (280–100 nm) → The most dangerous, but don’t worry—it’s completely blocked by the ozone layer!

Why Are UV Rays Stronger in the Mountains?

Here’s the deal: the higher you go, the stronger the UV exposure.

Why?

Because at high altitudes, the sun’s rays have a shorter path to Earth, meaning less is absorbed by the atmosphere.

And if that wasn’t enough, snow reflects UV radiation—almost doubling your exposure!

Stay Protected, Stay on Top!

To keep shredding the slopes without regrets, make sun protection part of your gear:

✅ Slather on SPF 50 – Use a natural and biodegradable sunscreen on all exposed skin, especially your nose, lips, ears, and neck.

✅ Cover Up – A hat or cap helps protect your head, face, and neck from direct rays.

✅ Rock Those Shades – Wear UV-filtering sunglasses that wrap around well—because sun glare off the snow is no joke!

Following  these simple steps, and you can enjoy the ride worry-free!

So, grab your gear, hit the slopes, and make this winter unforgettable! 🎿❄️☀️

Using natural& biodegradable sunscreen to protecting ourselves against UV rays during winter sports is the best practice!
